IATEFL 2016 was a great conference and a lot of learning took place there.
I will be honest, I was sometimes a little worried about teachers and their methods, this is actually on of the reasons I will speak in Barcelona for the Innovate in ELT conference, but more on that later.
All in all, it was a great conference, I urge you to watch some of the plenary sessions. Particularly good.
I was leading a forum on speaking because it definitely my passion. After studying a few languages, I have found speaking to be the vehicle fro effective learning and confident usage of language. I promote it wherever and whenever I can. However, the downside of this is that many students believe speaking anything, in any way, is good for improvement.
Like exercise, if you practise terribly, you will get terrible results.
Fortunately, some of the best teachers educate their learners into good speaking habits and how to correctly practise the skill at home. My presentation below talks about 4 areas that learners need to be educated in and it has some ideas for teachers too.
1 – Copy (or steal)
2 – Plan
3 – Repeat
4 – Reflect
These 4 are not exclusive to speaking and can be used to help your learners improve with any level, in any skill.
